Indianapolis, Ind. — Indianapolis police say they’ve busted the biggest dog fighting operation they’ve ever seen. Nearly two dozen people were arrested and nine dogs rescued in the 3000 block of West 60th Street just after 10:30 on Friday night.

The bust comes after an extensive investigation by both local police and federal officials with the Department of Agriculture. Undercover agents infiltrated the dog fighting arena built inside the garage of the home. Once the fighting began, they signaled SWAT officers.

What they found inside was an underground world of dog abuse and betting that few people could imagine happening here.

“Surprised, honestly,” said Thomas Arvin, who lives across the street from the house. “I did not see it coming.”

HARRISBURG – In 2008, Gov. Rendell signed the state’s new dog law, proclaiming it the toughest in the country governing commercial breeding kennels, which sell thousands of puppies to pet shops each year.
Now a standoff between the Rendell administration and animal welfare advocates over the use of wire flooring in cages is threatening final approval of the law’s regulations for the 100 commercial kennels that remain in Pennsylvania.

The Independent Regulatory Review Commission will hear public testimony Thursday before approving or rejecting the law’s 873 pages on conditions in commercial kennels.

Rendell administration officials will be defending what they call “a gap” in the law involving cage flooring. The law requires adult dogs to have solid flooring in cages, but allows puppies under 12 weeks to stand on wire flooring.

That means adults bred twice a year could end up living on wire through pregnancy and nursing for up to six or eight months a year, which opponents argue violates the spirit and letter of the law.

As a patrol dog for the MBTA Transit Police, 4-year-old Marco is trained to sprint after assailants and sniff for evidence, not pose for photos before a crowd.

So it was with some prodding yesterday that Marco sat for photographs in his new bulletproof vest, encouraged by his partner and staring intently at his favorite chew toy, held aloft near a bank of television cameras.

“Down . . . down,’’ said Officer Shawn McCarthy, Marco’s partner, as the dog — eager to explore the parking lot at Transit Police headquarters — settled into place between McCarthy and Madeleine Barowsky, a teenager from Framingham who raised money for the vest by selling homemade dog biscuits and dog-shaped earrings and refrigerator magnets.

Whenever McCarthy and Marco respond to reported crimes on the T or assist local departments, the dog takes the lead.

A blind dog and his seeing-eye dog in Agoura Hills are in search of a new home.

Hampton, a 2-year-old Lhasa Apso/poodle mix, is blind and has trouble getting around. He relies on a Chihuahua named Brownie to help herd him.

The dogs hit if off back in January during a walk, says Laurie Bernie of L.I.F.E. Animal Rescue.

“All of sudden, Brownie’s face just changed, and it was like, ‘Oh, something’s wrong here and I need to help him,’ and then they went all the way up my street, and he just herded him all the way up,” said Bernie.

A toddler who fell in dog dirt in a children’s playground at a Manchester park may have lost partial sight in one of her eyes.

Amiee Langdon was admitted to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital after wiping her eye with the mess after falling in it at Platt Fields Park.

She was treated for toxocariasis, a potentially lethal disease carried in dog faeces which can also blind.

Her mother said doctors would reveal the extent of the damage on Friday.

Amiee’s mother Suzanne said: “The doctor is going to do more tests on her eye, but we’re pretty sure she’s going to have more lasting damage in terms of sight.

From floridatoday.com

An anti-greyhound dog racing organization says it’s time for Florida to change regulations that force many gambling facilities to offer pari-mutuel operations such as dog racing in order to have poker rooms.

And Grey2K USA has an unlikely ally: Melbourne Greyhound Park and a handful of other, smaller dogs tracks in Florida where each year more and more revenues are coming from poker rooms and slot machines, not greyhound dog racing.

Figures from Florida’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation figures show that live dog racing at the Melbourne park has brought in $213,247 in total revenues– called “handle” in gaming parlance — through June. By comparison, its poker room, Club 52, was responsible for $4.4 million in total revenue over that same time. The track does not offer slot machines.

Revenue from simulcasts of dog racing, horse racing and jai alai generate a bit more than $2 million for Melbourne Greyhound annually, according to General Manager Pat Biddix, , but among the three, dog racing is not the largest money-maker.
