MADISON, N.J. (AP) – August 8, 2010 — A truckload of dogs has arrived in New Jersey from overwhelmed animal shelters in the Gulf Coast region.

Officials from the Humane Society of the United States and the Louisiana SPCA sent the dogs to St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison where they arrived on Friday.

Animal welfare officials say shelters along the Gulf Coast have seen a recent spike in people surrendering their pets because of the economic impact of the oil spill.

The majority of the dogs will be available for adoption at the Madison shelter, with others placed at partnering agencies around the state.

Humane Society officials say it’s the second time in the past month they’ve transferred dogs from overcrowded Louisiana shelters and sent them to rescue groups in the Northeast.
