UPDATE:

Here’s an Associated Press update about this story.

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AP) — An animal rights group in Bosnia called on authorities Wednesday to investigate a claim that a disturbing video of a young woman throwing six newborn puppies into a river was filmed in the Balkan country.

The video, which first appeared on YouTube, shows the hooded girl taking the puppies from a white bucket and throwing them, one by one, into a river.

Velimir Ivanisevic from the Association of Citizens for Prevention of Cruelty Against Animals SOS said his group received an e-mail that allegedly identifies her as a teenager from the central Bosnian town of Bugojno.

“We cannot say with 100 percent certainty that this is true…but we received some other information which leads us to believe that it is,” Ivanisevic said.

He added that the group has called on authorities to investigate the claim.

Bosnia recently adopted an animal protection law instituting fines of between €15 ($12) and €5,000 ($6,400) for private citizens, and between € 100,00 ($78,7) and €100,000 ($128,000) for institutions, for cruel treatment of animals, but Ivanisevic said authorities continue to ignore cases reported by his group.

Police in Bugojno said they were investigating the report, but refused to discuss details.

END UPDATE.

A young woman, believed to be from Bosnia, is seen in video picking up puppies and throwing them into a rapidly moving river.

By MICHAEL SHERIDAN For NY DAILY NEWS

I will not be posting the video or linking to it. This is just another sad story of a human being showing no signs of empathy towards another living creature. It really just sickens me.

It’s hard enough to post this one image, but if anyone recognizes her please call the authorities.

Even Cruella De Vil would be disgusted.

A young woman has become the focus of death threats and hate messages after video of her throwing live puppies into a river was recently posted online.

Her identity is unknown, but some have suggested she may be from Bosnia.

The disturbing video shows the young, blonde woman smiling as she picks several puppies out of a dirty bucket and viciously tosses them into a rapidly flowing river.

At one point, as the woman lobs a black-and-white pup into the water, she can clearly be heard saying, “whee.”

Online “investigators” have posted links to a YouTube page, as well as several Facebook profiles, accusing those people of being the girl or the person who filmed the video. It is unclear if the witch hunt has actually found those responsible, however.

The video was originally featured on YouTube, but has since been pulled because of its content.

Macomb County, Michigan — Last week, Heather Goff, 23, watched her 2-year-old golden retriever, G, abandon her playful personality, become lethargic and die.

The St. Clair Shores woman said that despite veterinary care, including blood transfusions, G’s decline was rapid and shocking.

“She was the happiest, most healthiest dog ever,” she said.

G died of leptospirosis, a rare bacterial infection that some Macomb County veterinarians said they think is on the rise. Multiple cases have been confirmed in Warren and St. Clair Shores this summer; normally, there are just a few per year.

The main culprits are rat urine and standing water, said Dr. Courtney Farr of the Parkview Animal Hospital in Warren, who did not treat G.

TARQUINIA, Italy — This summer, Italy’s special squad of rescue workers were again chalking up success: some 300 dogs ready to help save lives on dozens of Italian beaches.

In early August in Tarquinia, a town about 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of Rome, the dogs and their human partners saved on the same day two girls, who had fallen off their boat and two others, who had fallen off an inflatable raft.

The labradors, golden retrievers and Newfoundlands trained by the Italian School for Rescue Dogs (http://www.waterrescuedogs.com/) are credited with saving more than 100 lives, including a dozen this year alone.

“Compared to the rest of the world, the school is the only one that systematically monitors beaches every summer with human-canine units,”
Roberto Gasbarri, the school’s coordinator for central-southern Italy, told AFP.

The teams work in most of Italy’s 20 regions, even landlocked ones such as northern Trentino Alto-Adige, where rescuers monitor lakes.

Pittsburgh — For some, it’s proof that the dining scene has, quite literally, gone to the dogs.

But to animal lovers such as Dan and Joan Huber of Observatory Hill, eating with your pet al fresco at a favorite restaurant is like the cherry on top of a sundae . . . or should we say a tasty piece of rawhide after a dinner of kibble. Whatever the language, it’s a treat.

It’s also savvy marketing, as Cassis on Western Avenue in Allegheny West has been pleased to discover. While dog owners are hardly taking over, the restaurant has drawn as many as seven dogs and their masters to its patio off Galveston Avenue since starting its Tuesday “Bowl and Biscuit Night” in July, and promoting it on Facebook. Regulars include the Hubers and their 2-year-old miniature schnauzer, Samson Amadeus.

Walking with your pooch to a neighborhood hangout is one thing. The Hubers load their wiry bundle of energy into their car, and happily so, for the 10-minute drive to the North Side. Why should neighbors be the only ones to enjoy owner/executive chef Dianne Porter’s good eats?

“Lady Di always has a beautiful menu,” says Mrs. Huber, who on a recent Tuesday was noshing on baked brie with roasted peppers and potatoes. “And he loves Tuesday nights.”

From SFGate

Drew Barrymore is mourning the death of her beloved dog Flossie — the pooch whose barking saved her life when a fire engulfed her home in 1998.

The star doted on her adopted chow-yellow Labrador mix, and even credited the pooch with saving her and ex-husband Tom Green when a fire ripped through their Beverly Hills home in May 1998.

Flossie passed away last month, and the actress honored her beloved pet by spreading her ashes across the Ganges river during a recent trip to India — considered to be one of the most sacred spots in the world.

And now she’s working on training a new pup, whose picture she showed off on David Letterman’s late-night talk show on Tuesday, before revealing Flossie’s death.

She said, “That is my new dog, Douglas. … I rescued him. He was brought to the pound when he was two weeks old, he’s six months.

“I had three other dogs, one of which, Flossie, was an infamous little soul — I had her until she was almost 16. She passed away about a month ago. She had such a good life and what more could you ask for than 16 years with your soul mate sidekick?

“I actually brought some of her ashes to India and put them in the Ganges, which is a very sacred thing to do.”

From The Washington Post

Dover police say a woman’s dog scared off a would-be rapist in her apartment. The suspect was arrested later at his home.

Police say the 18-year-old woman was in her apartment Tuesday about 2 p.m. when she heard a knock on her bedroom door.

Authorities say the man, who did not have permission to be in her apartment, grabbed the woman and tried to rape her.

The woman’s dog started acting aggressively, and the man fled.

Thirty-year-old James B. Benson Jr. of Dover was arrested Wednesday and charged with attempted rape and other offenses. He is being held after failing to post $51,500 bail.
