SAN DIEGO — After an international investigation, help from abroad and a little tenacity, the case of the Italian German shepherd has been solved.
Five days after the wayward pup showed up at the Gilman Drive Park-N-Ride, county animal officials were able to track down its owner Monday to a Coronado apartment.
But one mystery remains: How did the dog get from Coronado to La Jolla? Authorities say they’ll probably never know.
The owner, Edmond Stevens, told authorities that he bought the puppy in Italy while stationed aboard the U.S. Navy command ship Mount Whitney a year ago.

A cancer survivor who owns a medically prescribed service dog says her rights were violated when a landlord refused to rent an apartment in Secaucus because of a “no-pets” rule, and now the state Division of Civil Rights is allowing the case to move forward.
The Division on Civil Rights announced today it has issued a finding of probable cause against a Hudson County apartment building owner and a real estate agency that listed his rental units for allegedly refusing housing to a Khalill and Jackie Smart of Secaucus.
Khalill and Jackie Smart, a breast cancer patient also diagnosed as having post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of her illness and treatment, were denied when they sought to rent an apartment advertised in December, their complaint says.
Landlord Ray Saoud, who owns the nine-unit apartment building on Maple Street in Secaucus, and Peterson Real Estate, also of Secaucus, which handled the property, were named by the Attorney General’s Office in the complaint.

A senior Iranian cleric has decreed dogs are “unclean” and should not be kept as pets — a move aimed at discouraging western-style dog ownership in the Islamic state, a newspaper reported Saturday.
Dogs are considered “unclean” under Islamic tradition but, while relatively rare in Iran, some people do keep them as pets. By issuing a fatwa — a religious ruling — Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi has sent a clear message this trend must stop.
“Friendship with dogs is a blind imitation of the West,” he was quoted as saying in Javan daily. “There are lots of people in the West who love their dogs more than their wives and children.”
Guard dogs and sheep dogs are considered acceptable under Islamic law, but Iranians who carry dogs in their cars or take them to public parks can be stopped by police and fined.

A Hungarian dog has been reunited with his owners after being sucked into the sky still in his kennel by the wind from a huge storm.
Agnes Tamas, 57, said she had chained her dog who she has renamed Lucky to the dog house when he was swept away by what she described as the worst storm anyone in her village of Gesztered can remember.
She said: “I saw the roofs of the local houses being ripped off one by one, and I ran into my garden to try and get to the cellar.
“I couldn’t believe it when the dog house flew up into the air – complete with my dog cowering inside.
“It was like something out of the wizard of Oz.”
Lucky was eventually found 20 miles away after local radio reported an appeal for him to be traced. The dog house and the chain however had vanished.
Kalman Csutor who found Lucky and called the Red Cross said: “He was pretty shaken – I have no idea what happened to the dog house or whether the wind carried him all that way – but when i found him he was 20 miles from home.”
