California Dogs Get New Leash On Life North Of Border

By SUE MANNING For The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Life after doggy death row was just a three-hour jet ride away for 60 pooches flown to Canada on Friday for adoption north of the border.

Canadian philanthropist Jan Folk watched as the small dogs were loaded into her private, 11-seat Gulfstream III headed for Edmonton, Alberta, where she said all of them would find new homes within three weeks. There will be a long line of people at the shelter early Monday, she said.

Thirty terriers, cockapoos, Yorkies, Chihuahuas, bichons and other breeds from the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority in Downey took off from Long Beach Airport, along with 30 small dogs from the Central California Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Fresno.

The Downey dogs were all unclaimed, unchipped and untagged and had been at the shelter just south of Los Angeles between 13 and 30 days, Reyes said.

They were literally on doggy death row.

“We are only mandated to keep them for three days per state law,” Reyes said. “We hang on because we know these little cuties are a hot item somewhere. These are not feral dogs. They are fluffy little cute things that are trained. It’s mind-blowing that dogs so adorable can sit in an animal shelter and not be claimed or adopted.”

Folk, who has a 10-year-old chocolate Lab named Molly, has sponsored four freedom flights in the last year, so she has now taken 312 small dogs to Edmonton, where she sits on the board of the humane society.

While Folk lives in Canada, she has a boat in Huntington Beach. “I’ve had dogs since I was 7 years old. I am absolutely crazy about dogs. They are the one thing that can make me smile in a day.”

Because she was spending time in California, Folk said she figured, “I might as well save some dogs.”

Folk said she sold her two Canadian companies — National Home Warranty and J. Folk and Associates — a few years ago.

She wouldn’t reveal the amount of money she’s spent on the international dog flights, except to say “it’s pretty substantial.” She is looking for a partner so she can sponsor more flights.

“They don’t have to go to Canada. I’d fly them to New York, as long as they go somewhere and get adopted,” she said.

Hundreds of California dogs have been flown to New York and other eastern U.S. cities where — like Edmonton — there is a severe shortage of small dogs.

Unfortunately, 30 dogs barely made a dent in the dog population at the Downey shelter, which is full with 200 dogs, Reyes said.

In February, Folk took 114 dogs from Fresno to Canada. That is how many dogs the Fresno shelter alone will euthanize in a day, she said.

An odd-looking chihuahua called Princess Abby has won the dubious title of world’s ugliest dog 2010.

The grey and white pooch – which has a curved back and legs (as well as a scrunched up left eye) won the annual World’s Ugliest Dog contest in Northern California.

Each year the strangest looking dogs are rewarded, this years winner was malformed Princess Abby – rescued off the streets just five months ago.

Owner Kathleen Francis – who won $1,000 – says she ignored how the four-year-old looked when she took her in from the Humane Society which had found her malnourished and flea-infested.

To scoop the title, Princess Abby beat 14 other dogs in her category before making it to the final… where one look had her competition howling in horror.

Event vet Karen “Doc” Halligan said, “Princess Abby is the poster child for spaying and neutering your animals. Her looks probably stem from being inbred.”

The World’s Ugliest Dog Contest event is now in its 22nd year. Miss Ellie, last years winner had been due to challenge to regain the title but died earlier this month at the age of 17.

Mariah Carey’s ‘Stiffed’ Vet Slept With Sick Pup

By Beth Landman For The New York Post

It’s better to be Mariah Carey’s dog than to work for her.

The veterinarian whom the songbird allegedly stiffed out of some $30,000 slept with the sick pooch at the diva’s California mansion during the doc’s 2½-week assignment and even sent videotapes of the pup to Carey when she was out of town.

New York-based Dr. Cindy Bressler cared for Carey’s Jack Russell puppy, Dolomite, around the clock with her team, constantly feeding the pooch and making sure it was all right.

“We were up all night caring for and tube-feeding the puppy,” said a source who worked with the vet. “Mariah loves her dogs and requested the best care, and that’s what she got.

“Dr. Bressler left her practice [in New York] and was there through the pre- and postnatal care and the delivery. We provided 24-hour day care.”
The singer visited the ill pooch several times a day, and Bressler sent her videos of the dog when Mariah could not be there, the source said.
Bressler and her staff stayed in a room at Carey’s sprawling Bel Air home when they were not taking turns holding vigil in the dog’s room. Little Dolomite needed in tensive care after being born to another of Mariah’s dogs, Cha- Cha — who was only six months old when she gave birth.
It soon became clear that Carey did not appreciate that hiring a vet for weeks of in-home care would cost more than some of the other services to which she was accustomed, the source said.

“She [Bressler] is a doctor, and Mariah acted like Dr. Bressler was one of her hair or makeup people,” the source said.

According to Bressler’s suit, filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, Bressler gave Carey a bill for $37,790.32, but the singer only paid $8,231.50.

Bressler is seeking the remaining $29,559, plus legal fees.

Bressler declined to comment, but her attorney, Michael Posner, said she “provided lifesaving, round-the-clock medical care to Mariah Carey’s puppy. This was a serious medical matter that required professional care by a veterinarian and veterinary nurses.

“Dr. Bressler also helped deliver the puppy, which was of low birth weight, and administered nutritional feeding in the absence of an appropriate level of milk production during nursing. The costs were clearly communicated costs associated with this level of treatment. Despite successful treatment, Ms. Carey still refused to pay her balance.”

Carey’s attorney, Orin Snyder, said, “This abusive lawsuit appears to be a crass publicity stunt. As a matter of principle, Mariah intends to fight this baseless case and is confident that it will be dismissed.”

From WHOTV.com

The Polk County Sheriff’s Department has arrested a man they believe shot and tried to drown an English bulldog over the weekend.

The sheriff’s office says 49-year-old Bernard Lear of Altoona was identified through tips to Polk County Crimestoppers and arrested after interviews Wednesday night.

Authorities had been looking for the man responsible for injuries to an English bulldog that was found on Saturday in the woods near where I-80 crosses Northwest 26th Street. Witnesses say they saw a man trying to drown the dog and then left it to die. The Animal Rescue League later had to euthanize the dog.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Department had released a description of the man and the vehicle he was driving. They say tips helped them locate the vehicle, which led them to Lear.

Lear is in the Polk County Jail on a $6,300 bond. He’s charged with animal torture, non-payment of child support and felon in possession of a firearm.
