Animal Control in Miami-Dade County has to go round up strays before the kids get out of school for the summer. This is what happens when people (dog owners) think of no one but themselves… animals always suffer.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — A New York man who killed his girlfriend’s dog by snapping its spine has been sentenced to a year behind bars.

Twenty-one-year-old Jonathan King, of Yorktown, was sentenced Tuesday. King has admitted that he killed Libra, a Yorkshire terrier-Maltese mix, in April 2009 by yanking its collar hard enough to dislocate its head from its spine.

Prosecutors say King went to his girlfriend’s house at a time when he knew no one would be home and killed the dog “with no justifiable purpose.”

The dog’s body was found behind a clothes dryer. King was identified when DNA analysis determined that blood found beneath the dog’s claws was his.

Steven Levine, the father of the dog’s owner, says the family considers King “a danger to our family, our community and our society.”

(May 26) — The government vowed to crack down on abusive dog breeders following a report that showed shocking conditions at many puppy mills, with some animals engaging in cannibalism, living in their own feces and infested with ticks.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack promised stronger enforcement of animal welfare laws, with tougher penalties for repeat offenders.

“The issues raised about the regulation of problematic dog dealers are very troubling,” Vilsack said, according to The Oklahoman newspaper. “USDA will reinforce its efforts under its animal welfare responsibilities.”

We realize the Dog Files is a National website. So if you aren’t in the area, please don’t think you can’t help save one of our dogs. We will work with you to the best of our ability to get the dog you chose to you. Please open your heart to a shelter dog in need!

There are many ways you can help if you are unable to adopt one of the pups.

1. Sharing this post on twitter, facebook, email, craigslist, everyone you know and to rescue groups and no-kills in your area.

2. Fostering a dog by taking one into your home (and away certain death at the shelter) and taking care of it while you (with our help) look for it’s forever home.

3. Donating a few bucks to the Dog Files so we can help get the dogs out of the high kill shelter and chip in for the medical treatment that might be necessary.

4. Get the word out for people to follow the Dog Files on our Facebook Fan Page and Twitter!

From Google News

NEW CITY, N.Y. — It wasn’t quite man-bites-dog, but there were men and there were dogs and there was biting. A sheriff’s office said Monday that one man bit another during a fight over a couple of dogs at a park in suburban New York City. Rockland County sheriff’s Capt. William Barbera said two dog owners got into it Sunday night. One didn’t like the way their pets were playing at a dog park in New City, about 30 miles north of New York.

Barbera said that a third man tried to break up the fight and that one of the combatants bit him on the wrist. He said that no one has been arrested but that the case is still being investigated.
