Craig Henderson, 13, of Orion Township gets to know Colby, a Canine Assistants spokesdog, on Tuesday. Craig learned he is to get his own dog later this year. "I can't wait," said Craig, who has three genetic disorders. (SUSAN TUSA/DETROIT FREE PRESS)

At 13 years old, Craig Henderson of Orion Township has to deal with three genetic disorders that affect his speech and ability to move on his own. This year however, he’ll be getting some extra help as well as a new, beloved companion. This helper dog will not only help him pick up dropped items and turn on lights, but gain independence as well.
Craig’s mom Donna Henderson heard about the Canine Assistants program, a nonprofit organization who trains and provides service dogs to those with physical disabilities or special needs, and applied for a dog for Craig about two years ago. On Tuesday, Craig found out his new best friend will be coming home with him later this year.
“I’m excited,” said Craig, who will be spending time training with the dog this summer. “I can’t wait.”
Frances Rosemeyer, the spokeswoman for the Georgia based Canine Assistant, states that each dog cost around $20,000 to train including other expenses. Craig’s dogs expense was offset however by donations from Kroger and Milk-Bone. Henderson believes that having a service dog will provide the freedom and confidence to help her son grow.
“He’s been looking forward to this for so long,” she said. “He’ll have a buddy. He’ll have someone to help him, other than mom and dad. It’s just a dream. He doesn’t ask for much of anything, but he really wants this, and I think it’ll change his life.”

The incredible story of Baltic, rescued from an ice sheet at sea, has struck a chord worldwide.
The sea-going mutt is being bombarded with e-mail, will likely soon have a Facebook page — and a family drove more than 300 miles from the Czech Republic in the false hope he was their lost pet.
Calls and e-mails have come from as far away as Australia and Canada praising the crew of a ship that rescued Baltic and pleading for updates and photos, said Ewa Baradziej-Krzyzankowska, the dog’s de facto spokeswoman, who works for the Sea Fisheries Institute in Gdynia, a co-owner of the scientific-research ship that saved Baltic.
The dog was rescued Jan. 25 after the ship’s crew spotted him floating 15 miles from land, trapped on an ice floe. The rescue was difficult because the frightened, shivering dog kept falling into the icy water.
It’s not clear where Baltic’s journey began, but he was seen two days before his rescue floating down the Vistula River 60 miles inland. Firefighters tried but failed to rescue him.
After Baltic’s rescue, a veterinarian declared him to be in remarkably good shape considering his ordeal. Still, he was put on a special diet because of stomach problems resulting from his long stretch without food. But he isn’t really sticking with that because the ship’s crew members love to sneak him treats, the spokeswoman said.
“Everybody loves him. All the crew spoils him terribly,†she said. “Just imagine — a crew of seasoned sailors who have experienced a lot in their lives, all crazy about a little dog.â€

WEST HOLLYWOOD — West Hollywood is expected to ban the sale of cats and dogs at pet shops under a measure designed to strike a blow at so-called puppy mills.
The City Council will take a final vote on the ordinance today after giving it a preliminary approval earlier this month. It would take effect next month and give existing pet stores until September to stop sales.
City officials say the idea is to reduce demand that can lead to inhumane conditions by breeders at puppy mills and kitten factories.
The law exempts home breeders, animal rescue groups and shelters.
The ordinance says 35,000 dogs and 67,000 cats were euthanized in city and county shelters in Los Angeles in the past year.
