Chances of a dog being saved after being carried away on a ice floe for more then 100 miles may seem nearly impossible but this dog was a very lucky one.

While struggling not to fall into the water after being swept away into the Baltic Sea this pup was fortunate enough to have cross paths with sailors who rescued him.

“He didn’t even squeal. There was just fear in his big eyes.” the ship’s engineer said. Video of this rescue can be viewed below.

The Labrador Retriever once again made number one for the American Kennel Clubs most popular breeds of 2009. This lovable breed has since been holding first place for the past two decades.

Catching up to the Labrador is the German Shepherd who became runner up after jumping pass the Yorkshire Terriers. Following the Yorkshire Terriers in fourth and fifth place are Golden Retrievers and Beagles.

One of the breeds that have raced their way up dramatically throughout the years is the Bulldogs. Ranking in at 21 in 1999 they currently hold the seventh place in 2009 moving up one from last year.

The German Shepherds was once the number one breed of the 1920s, later losing its spot after World War II.

“Labs have been America’s top dog for nearly two decades due to their loyal and gentle nature,” said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “But the German Shepherd Dog has gained ground recently, quite possibly due to the increased attention they receive for their security efforts at home and abroad. Hailed as the world’s leading police, guard and military dog, this energetic and fun-loving breed is a loyal family pet, ideal companion and dependable K-9 partner when duty calls.”

Who will take over in 2010? Will the Labrador once again keep it’s place at number one?

You want to see a wagging tail when you go shopping at a shelter for your first dog, according to Victoria Stilwell, who stars in Animal Planet’s It’s Me or the Dog.

People are often drawn to the shy or scared animals, but it is best to leave the withdrawn pups to experienced dog owners, Stilwell said.

“You’ve got to be careful of the dogs that stay at the back of the kennel,” she said. “

The dog stays in the back because it doesn’t want to socialize with you. It can be simply tired, and it just needs its space to rest.

“A lot of times, too, it can mean a dog isn’t that social,” said Stilwell, who works with rescue shelters in Atlanta.

The dogs with behavior issues are the ones that will require extra training and patience. The barkers, chewers and unfriendly dogs often end up back in a shelter when inexperienced dog owners become overwhelmed.

“And it becomes a yo-yo dog — in and out and in and out,” Stilwell said. “And, my gosh, you get to the point where the dog is stressed out and seems unadoptable because of what it has been through.”

Stilwell suggests

• Do your research on breed characteristics. Try to pick a dog that is going to be best for your family. “If it’s a border collie, for example, and you are laid-back and don’t get a lot of exercise, then don’t get a dog that has border collie in it.”

•Choose a dog that comes to the front of the kennel and is excited to see you. Look for soft body language and avoid a dog that is very still and alert.

•If you see a dog that you like, take it out of the kennel to an open space such as a grassy area so you can see if the dog wants to relate to you. Shelter environments are stressful, and taking the dog outdoors may help it relax.

• When you bring the dog home, don’t lavish it with loads of affection. “Your dog gets used to the attention. Then you go back to work, and there’s nobody. And that’s a classic cause for separation anxiety,” she said. Allow the dog to investigate and get used to the feeling of the place. Don’t crowd the animal, but when it comes to you for attention, give it. “You need to back off a little bit and realize that your dog is making a massive life change, and give him space to do that,” Stilwell said.

In life, Buddy, the shepherd/blue heeler mix, was a beloved pet.

In death, he has become a rallying point for outraged pet lovers around the world who are tired of sickos hurting animals.

Buddy’s story has galvanized Grand Junction, Colo., near where Buddy was dragged to death just before New Year’s, provoking scores of people to cram into the courtroom and spill into the street when the man accused of killing him appeared at a preliminary hearing.

It has prompted the online petition “Demand Justice for Buddy!” The petition achieved its goal of 100,000 signatures — from people in nearly every state and dozens of countries, including Canada, Denmark and Australia — in just 11 days. (More than 104,000 had signed at thepetitionsite.com by Tuesday). And it inspired United Kingdom singer/songwriter Maria Daines to write and record Buddy’s Song, a moving tribute posted on her website.

“The U.S. assistant attorney (who is prosecuting the case) told me she’s never seen anything like it. She’s received several thousand e-mails,” Paul Shockley, the reporter who has been covering the case for the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, tells me.

Chinese Legal Experts Call For A Ban On Dog And Cat Meat Trade

It can be a hard pill to swallow if we think about our beloved companions in a hot boiling pot ready to be served. However, this is exactly the case in many areas of China where both dog and cat meat is sold to the public. It isn’t uncommon to see dog and cat meat restaurants in China especially in northern China because back in ancient times dog meat was once considered a medicinal tonic, and popular for its supposed warming qualities.

Dogs and cats raised in farms were often hung and killed right in front of the buyers at street stands where the dog and cats meat are sold. This horrific practice has since attracted tens of thousands of signatures from online petitions against dog and cat consumption from the now growing pet-loving, urban middle class of China.

Pet owners not only frown upon this practice but are worried as well due to cases where dogs served at the restaurants are often stolen pets. With tension from the public and pet lovers all around the world, laws are slowly being written to ban and protect more animals facing abusive situations in China.

In a huge move for Animal Rights Activists, Chinese legal experts are proposing a ban on eating dogs and cats. According to the draft, illegal sale or consumption of pets would incur the maximum of 15 days in prison for individuals charged and a 500,000 yuan fine for businesses.

Though the punishment is not much, change might finally be on it’s way.

“We are proposing that all dog and cat eating should be banned because it is causing many social problems,” said Chang Jiwen, a law professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences who heads the drafting team.

Chang Jiwen claims that the economic impact of the ban would be small due to the increasingly large population of people who are less dependent on dog and cat meat.

Naturally, the plan to ban a practice that has been done for hundreds of years will stir up heated debates between animal welfare groups and defenders of traditional values. Protest from those who feel injustices in animal welfare while the human population at large are still in poverty, and protest from those who believe in the change to move forward.

Cross your fingers, this might be the beginning of the end of a brutal practice involving our beloved companion animals.
